WILD ANDALUSIA and THE GREEN NORTH

The four-part ARTE discovery “Spain Adventure” shows the Spanish mainland from its most beautiful side: On barren plateaus, storm-swept cliffs, green olive groves and golden beaches, we discover a rich animal world, long-forgotten cultural treasures and meet people who love their traditions and in the modern Europe have arrived. In pre-pandemic times, Spain had over 120 million visitors a year – in addition to the mild climate, the beautiful beaches, magnificent cities and varied gastronomy attracted people to the country. The four-part documentary “Adventure Spain” shows that this is only a fraction of what the Spanish mainland has to offer. The focus here is also on flora and fauna beyond the tourist paths – and the people who are passionate about ensuring that these living environments are sustainably preserved or even improved.

“Wild Andalusia” focuses on the beauty of Andalusia. Starting with the wild and romantic Cabo de Gata natural park and its crystal-clear water, the route leads via Granada with its cultural treasures to the Strait of Gibraltar, where fishermen are committed to sustainable fishing. On the pilgrimage to El Rocío we dive into the colorful world of the old pilgrimages and finally experience how people in Seville and in the olive groves in the north of the city make it possible for old traditions such as flamenco and the production of olive oil to find their way into find the modern.

In the episode “The Green North” we explore the north of the country. Starting in Galicia on what is known as the “Death Coast” we explore the Celtic heritage of an area that seems like a mix of Ireland, Norway and the Caribbean. In addition to the thousand kilometers of Atlantic coast, the inland region is characterized by vast fields, large cities such as the ultra-modern Bilbao, cultural treasures such as the Roman gold mine Las Mèdulas and high alpine panoramas. The Pyrenees on the border with France offer spectacular views and the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela is a crowning glory.
